Course Description and Information

The nickname “Ham Radio” refers to the non-commercial radio frequencies (bands) that are designated by the FCC for public & civic use.  This three day Ham Radio Technician Course will prepare you to take the FCC exam, which will be given on the final day of class.

  • Ham radio is an important communications back-up during disasters and emergencies in the event that Local Area Networks (LAN) including cell phones may be rendered inoperable.
  • During tornado season, monitor storm spotter reports (SKYWARN) in real-time in coordination with the National Weather Service.
  • Other than the initial cost of the equipment (for as little as $50 or less for some hand-held portable radios that are on the market), there is no cost to use ham radio frequencies.
  • With a radio operator’s license you can volunteer for many different agencies for either emergency response or provide support for community events:  RACES, ARES, CERT, MRC, American Red Cross and many more!
